Whisper Numbers vs. Consensus: What the Gap Tells You
Not financial advice. Verify claims independently.
Every earnings print has two bars: the published consensus and the whisper number — what traders actually expect.
This week's example is Micron: official consensus ~$50.6B/$31.3, but the stock's 280% run says the real bar is higher. When whisper >> consensus:
- A "beat" on the published number can still sell off — it missed the real bar
- In-line prints with strong guidance outperform misses with soft outlooks
- The options market's implied move (~9% for MU) prices the whisper, not the estimate
Rule of thumb: compare the implied move to the stock's average post-earnings move. If implied >> historical, the crowd expects a surprise — the easy win is already priced.
